Hi Aaron, over the past few months I have been feeling very stiff and experienced pain in my hips and knees. It seems to be worse in the mornings. My GP has told me this may be osteoarthritis. Do you have any advice on how I can manage this? I attend my local over 50’s exercise class, am I able to continue with this?  Thanks, SP-Corindi Beach

Hi SP, thanks for getting in contact. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder, which is due to aging and wear and tear on a joint. Pain and stiffness in the joints are the most common symptoms. The pain is often worse after exercise and when you put weight or pressure on the joint. If you have osteoarthritis, your joints probably become stiffer and harder to move over time. You may even notice a rubbing, grating, or crackling sound when you move the joint.

Exercise is considered one of the best treatments for osteoarthritis. When properly prescribed, exercise can be a safe and effective method of relieving pain, enhancing function and ultimately improving your overall sense of well-being and quality of life. As well as land based exercise, hydrotherapy has been shown to benefit those suffering from OA. It is thought that the warmth of the water offers support and helps alleviate pain, while strength and stamina improve due to the greater resistance of the water. It’s also reported that the pressure from the water can help reduce swelling that may occur around your joints and enhance balance.

As a thank you for your question and to help with your management of OA I am pleased to offer you a free suitability assessment for hydrotherapy with one of our physiotherapists- just call 66540244 to book an appointment. Regards, Aaron
