Hydrotherapy is the use of water in the treatment of disease or injury. Ancient Greeks and Romans routinely used water as treatment for various ailments and the health benefits of water therapy continue to this day.

In a physio sense, when we discuss hydrotherapy we are talking about aquatic physiotherapy or pool based treatment to help treat your injuries and get you back to better function.

How does Hydrotherapy work?

The thermal effect, water resistance and sensation of water all combine to increase the flow of blood and decrease the body’s sensitivity to pain. Immersion in water creates a feeling of weightlessness. It eliminates gravity and adds buoyancy, enabling us to exercise and move in ways in which we would not be able to on dry land. Alternatively the water can be used to add resistance during exercises, strengthening muscles and assisting in recovery from injuries.
