With the weather outside so unpredictable of late, ranging from steaming hot to sopping wet, it’s common for many of us to find a range of excuses to avoid exercise.  The decrease in activity often leads to more pain from your arthritic joints, weight gain and a general decrease in your overall well being.  So, what if there was an ideal way to exercise in comfort, reduce your pain levels, and increase your strength and flexibility?  The good news is there is!  We caught up with Candy Williams and Sam Brown, Exercise Physiologists at Mid North Coast Physio, to find out how to look after yourself by exercising in a different way with hydrotherapy.

Why can hydrotherapy be so helpful for my aching joints?

If you suffer from general aches and pains, regularly complain of a bad back, or you’re sick of hip and knee pain, then hydrotherapy is ideal.  Exercising in chest-deep warm water reduces the load on aching bodies by up to two thirds of your body weight. This allows you to move more freely in the water than would normally be possible on land. Something we often hear from our clients in the pool is “wow! I would never be able to do this on land!”

 

How does it work?

Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for such a wide and varied range of acute and chronic health and musculoskeletal conditions including arthritis, post-surgery rehabilitation and back pain. It is a very safe, challenging and beneficial environment for neurological conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Muscular Dystrophy as well as being popular in older populations, particularly those at risk of falling.  It’s the properties of water itself that contribute to water-based exercise being such a beneficial form of treatment for rehabilitation- mainly the buoyancy, the warmth and the resistance of the water.

Can I do hydrotherapy at MNC Physio?
Yes.  The great news is we have our own private hydrotherapy pool in our Woolgoolga clinic, the only privately-owned clinic with this available in our region.  Our pool sits at around 32°C which is beautiful all year round and is an ideal therapeutic temperature at which to exercise. There is also a ramp available for easy access into the pool. The classes are small and individualised to ensure you get the attention you deserve while getting the most out of each session. You will complete a couple of individual sessions in the pool prior to joining a class so you are comfortable and have a great understanding of your initial exercises.
