While the cause isn’t well understood, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) often can impact people who are otherwise healthy. It can impact kids, and adults of all ages. The big question is where can you find help to understand it and get help to address it. We caught up with Anna Hicks and Ingrid Sivertsen, Dietitians at Mid North Coast Physio, to find out more.
FODMAPs and IBS: What’s the deal?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. It will affect 30% of the population over their life. Symptoms include changes to bowel habits including abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. IBS can be confused with other gastrointestinal conditions, but your GP can help rule out other possibilities.
Is there a cure? Or a treatment?
If your GP suspects that you have IBS, the best thing you can do is see an Accredited Practicing Dietitian. A dietitian will work with you to discover what foods trigger your symptoms and will make sure you’re meeting your nutritional needs.
A friend mentioned that FODMAPs are linked to IBS. Is that true? What are FODMAPS?!
FODMAPs are a group of carbohydrates, which, in some people, can produce gas and pull extra water into the gut – this is what leads to pain. FODMAPs are found in some really healthy foods, so it’s important not to cut them out unnecessarily. A dietitian will work out whether it’s the right thing for you. They may guide you through a low FODMAP diet – these are short-lived (4-6 weeks) and involve reintroducing one carbohydrate group at a time. This way, you can be sure you’ll be eating the widest possible range of foods.
