Patella Femoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) refers to pain felt around or behind the knee cap (patella) and is one of the most common causes of knee pain.

What causes PFPS?

PFPS can be caused by a variety of factors including:

  • Involvement in high impact sports e.g. netball, basketball, soccer
  • Over training or sudden increase in activity
  • Abnormal foot, knee, or hip biomechanics
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle tightness
  • Direct trauma

How do I know if I have PFPS?

PFPS can present differently for everyone, so it is important to consult your physiotherapist for a thorough assessment to confirm the diagnosis. However, symptoms may include:

  • Pain in the knee going up or down stairs
  • Pain in the knee when bending/squatting
  • Pain with prolonged sitting while the knees are bent

How is PFPS treated?

Here at Mid North Coast Physiotherapy we are experts in treating PFPS. After determining the cause of the problem your physiotherapist will give you a written plan and discuss with you the best course of action to get you back to pain free activity as soon as possible. Treatment can include:

  • Trigger point dry needling
  • Soft tissue release
  • Taping
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Home exercise program involving strengthening and stretching
  • Education on appropriate amounts of activity
  • Prescription of custom orthotics or knee braces
