No matter who you are and what you love doing, there’s going to be times your body stops you from achieving your best.  However, that doesn’t mean you need to stop doing everything.  Many physios will tell you to rest and avoid doing anything heavy, but that shouldn’t always be the case.  We caught up with Julian White, physiotherapist and weightlifting coach, to find out more about how he can help you reach your health and fitness goals.

Tell us a little about yourself.

After completing my Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney and working in a range of different roles in Sydney, I made the move to Coffs a couple of years ago. Before working as a physio, I completed a Bachelors of Psychological Science, served in the Defence Force and worked in international medical assistance. Moving to Coffs Harbour has been amazing, and even with the cooler weather, it’s great to get out and about to explore everything the area has to offer.

I am a qualified Level Two Australian Weightlifting Federation coach and have been coaching Olympic Weightlifting for people of all ages for a number of years.  Outside of the clinic you’ll often find me in the gym trying to lift heavy things!

I love physiotherapy because it gives me the chance to utilise all my experience to help others. Typically, people think that physios are scared of people that want to train hard, lift heavy weights or do CrossFit workouts, that’s not the case with me. I enjoy pushing myself and enjoy working with anyone that wants to challenge themselves too.

What do you commonly see with athletes you’ve coached or treated?

Just because you’re active doesn’t mean you just have to accept having a sore back or aching knees and shoulders. People are often reluctant to seek help, because they worry they will be told the only way to get better is to stop training or stop competing in the sport they love. As a physio, I consider keeping you active and regularly training as vital to your treatment. I can help you, and will work with your coaches or trainers, to adapt your training to keep you progressing while you overcome any obstacles.

Does that mean you only work with athletes?

Not at all! Physiotherapy can be beneficial to everybody, and for some people the demands of their job are just as taxing as a sport! My goal is to help you understand any physical challenges you may have and empower you to overcome them. Whether that is recovering after joint replacement surgery or treating long term back pain, I will work with you to reach your goals.
