Stop Sports Injuries Before They Occur

Sport is an essential part of staying fit and active. It doesn’t matter if you’re a teenager chasing the dream or an adult chasing some beers after the game, we all stand to benefit from it. It’s why my number one tip to patients is to stay as active as possible.

However, there is a downside to sports and that’s injuries. Nobody wants to experience an injury no matter whether it’s as serious as a ligament tear or just a constant nagging injury you just can’t seem to shake. Sometimes injuries happen due to chance, but did you know a large portion of injuries are actually preventable? Research has shown that there are certain risk factors that make certain people more prone to injury.

As a result, a system has been developed called The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to help detect these risk factors and allow time to correct them before a catastrophic injury occurs.

What Does the Research Say?Functional movement

FMS is used by professional teams and leagues around the world including the NFL and the British Premier League. Athletes conduct 7 functional movement tests and are scored based on how well they can perform each movement on a scale of 0 to 3. Studies have proven that athletes who scored 14 or less are 12 times more likely to get injured than those scoring above a 14! The test allows physiotherapists to see where the athlete’s weaknesses lie and an exercise program can be developed specific to the athlete to correct these issues leading to a reduced risk of injury. The screen works with all ages from adolescents to adults, and all levels of sport from the weekend warrior to elite athletes.

What Should You Do?

It is recommended that each athlete gets screened before the season begins but it is always worthwhile to get screened as corrective exercises can also be done mid-season.
