Josie has moved up from Tasmania to join the Mid North Coast Physio team. She is extremely passionate about using exercise to improve your quality of life and is continually surprised at how good the weather is on the Coffs Coast! We caught up with Josie to learn a little more about her:
1. What do you love most about your job?
I love helping people, and as an exercise physiologist I get to help people every single day. I love helping people set goals and then take steps to reach those goals. Whether it be to improve their strength and balance, or to more specifically be able to reach around and put on their jacket comfortably, or pick up their child or grandchild. I love helping facilitate people to be able to do things they once thought they wouldn’t be able to do again.
2. Areas of interest?
I have a big interest in Pilates, falls prevention, and Parkinson’s disease. I love that specific exercise and movement can help every body and every condition. I really enjoy seeing the improvements that come from exercise in the people with a fear of falling, and the improvement of function in people with Parkinson’s disease. It’s incredible!
3. Your top tip
Movement is medicine. Find a physical activity you enjoy, set a time to do it, and continue to set the time aside to do it so it becomes a habit and part of your routine. The key is to make it a priority and to make it fun! It’s no good doing something if you hate it. If you don’t like walking, go for a swim instead. Try Pilates or hydrotherapy. Just find something you enjoy that gets you moving.
4. People would be surprised if they knew…
I might be a look sweet, but I’ve been doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a year, so don’t mess with me! 🙂
