Did you know there is a rapidly growing body of research documenting the benefits of Pilates exercise in the prevention of low back pain and other health related issues?
Findings from a randomised controlled study that appeared in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise July 2012 showed a marked change improvement in measurements of pain, disability, function and health-related quality of life – following an individual clinical Pilates program.
Leading local physiotherapist Aaron Hardaker says Pilates has a well-deserved reputation for treating back pain of all varieties. “Pilates revolves around developing a strong centre to the body, which develops stabilisation of the spine and strength in the muscles of the torso to “support” the spine,” Mr Hardaker said. “Poor posture and faulty movement patterns contribute greatly to back pain and if left unattended, these will lead to more critical structural damage.”
The recent research studied the effect of clinical Pilates on back pain. The major difference with clinical Pilates compared to standard Pilates is that it is administered by qualified physiotherapists using specialised exercises and equipment to strengthen the all important core muscles. The original Pilates regime was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the 20th century and has developed into an important health approach for improving strength and flexibility for people of all ages.
“At Urunga Physio and Northern Beaches Physio we have a fully equipped Pilates studio with individual and small group classes to ensure clients are able to get rid of their pain for good,” said Mr Hardaker. “Our physiotherapists have been able to achieve remarkable improvements for clients through our individualised approach to tackling their problems.”
