One of the most common injuries we see at Northern Beaches Physiotherapy is shoulder pathology. This type of injury commonly occurs NOT with big trauma, but over period of time with wear and tear. You will likely first dismiss this pain and then ignore it again as “ I haven’t done any injury” and “it will get better”.

Our experience is that these injuries don’t fix themselves!! The most common cause of restricted and painful shoulders are partial thickness tears of the Rotator Cuff tendons.

Risk factors for the development of this problem include:

  • Age: tendons deteriorate from 40 years + (like eyesight!)
  • Physical work such as gardening, fixing machinery, repetitive work in overhead positions
  • Sport with overhead work such as tennis and swimming
  • Weakness in the scapula and rotator cuff muscles
  • Poor posture leading to increased load on the tendons and muscles

Treatment for this injury includes mobilisation of the shoulder joint, massage, dry needling and stretching to help settle the affected area.

A rehabilitation program is then devised to treat the affected area and causes of the injury.

To help prevent this happening to you try these simple exercises.

  • · stretch your shoulder across your body as Greg is demonstrating in this picture. Hold for 20 seconds , 6 times, 3 times per day
  • · strengthen your rotator cuff muscles. This is performed using a theraband as shown in this video clip – Shoulder strengthening exercise for rotator cuff injuries
