Recent research from the World Health Organisation (WHO) has found the highest quality of healthcare comes from a collaborative team approach between a range of healthcare professionals.  If you’re not seeing multiple people within a team of healthcare providers, it’s highly likely you are missing out on getting what you really need to lead a happy, healthy life.  We caught up with Aaron Hardaker, director of Mid North Coast Physio, to find out why putting your health in the hands of just one health professional can be harming your health.

Why should we care about a having team approach to our health care needs healthcare?

Because without it you could be putting your health at risk.  The WHO describes it as “when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care.”  In reverse, this means if you only see your doctor, or your physio, or any other individual provider in isolation then you are missing out on receiving the best care available.  You need to tap into the knowledge and skill of a range of providers to ensure you are getting the best outcomes possible.

In reality, how does this “Team Approach” work for me and my health care needs?

It works by saving you time – you get to see the right people with the right skills to address your specific problems.  Let me Collaborative Healthcaregive you an example – I recently saw a client for a painful, arthritic knee.  She was in her fifties, diabetic and overweight.  The old-school physio approach when working in isolation would have been to treat her knee, reduce her pain, and send her on her way with some maintenance exercises.  Instead, in addition to physio treatment she has since seen our dietitia
n for better nutrition options to control her diabetes and reduce weight.  She has seen our exercise physiologist to assist with weight loss and improve her leg strength and flexibility to reduce to load on the knee, as well as consulting with our psychologist to assist with addressing some personal issues that have added to inactivity and weight gain in the past.  You can see from this example that without a team approach this client would not now be pain-free, feeling great and likely to lead a much healthier and happy life from here on.

How can we access these team healthcare options in the Coffs Harbour area?
